MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected from Monday’s game with Texas after arguing a play at first base.
With no out in the eighth inning and the Twins trailing 3-2, Jason Bartlett hit a grounder to second that Ramon Vazquez threw past first baseman Brad Wilkerson, who got tangled with Bartlett. The ball deflected off the wall in front of photographers and catcher Guillermo Quiroz made a sliding stop before the ball entered the Texas dugout.
First base umpire Jeff Nelson immediately pointed to first base and Gardenhire came out of the dugout to argue that Bartlett should have been awarded second.
“I just thought he could have made it to second had he have gotten free over there, and he didn’t think so,” Gardenhire said.
It was Gardenhire’s eighth ejection of the year and 36th of his career.
“I don’t like to get thrown out of games, but I’m going to fight for these guys as long as we’re playing baseball,” he said. “I got thrown out again tonight, which is not very good for my wife’s checkbook.”
