MILWAUKEE (AP) -Carlos Beltran tested his sore right knee Tuesday and remained in the New York Mets’ starting lineup against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The center fielder left Monday’s game after bruising his knee on a bizarre collision at home plate.
Beltran slid across the plate to score New York’s final run in the eighth inning of a 4-2 victory. Even though there was no play, he banged his knee into plate umpire Ed Rapuano, who apparently did not expect Beltran to slide.
The four-time All-Star tested the knee with trainers in the outfield before Tuesday night’s game.
“I can tolerate what I feel,” Beltran said. “There’s not sharp pain – just soreness in the area.”
Beltran hit a three-run homer in the third inning to give New York a 5-1 lead.
In other news, the Mets purchased right-hander Al Reyes’ contract from Double-A Binghamton and designated righty Ruddy Lugo for assignment.
Injured closer Billy Wagner (elbow) is expected to have another bullpen session this week. Sidelined since Aug. 3, Wagner threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Monday.
