ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -Baltimore Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora is expected to be sidelined about a week with a strained left hamstring.
Mora left Friday’s game against Tampa Bay in the third after he was hurt trying to beat out a ground ball .
“It’s sore,” Mora said Saturday. “Could be a week, or less.”
Mora is hitting .393 with 12 homers and 49 RBIs since the All-Star break.
“We’re not going to put Melvin on the DL,” Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said. “We think Melvin won’t require a 15-day DL.”
Outfielder Adam Jones, out with a foot injury, showed no ill effects one day after an extensive workout. He is expected to be activated from the disabled list when rosters can be expanded on Monday.
Closer George Sherrill, sidelined by a shoulder injury, played catch and is scheduled for a bullpen session Wednesday.
The Orioles recalled infielder Oscar Salazar from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned pitcher Radhames Liz to the International League club. Trembley said Liz will rejoin the team to start Tuesday’s game with Boston.
Orioles reliever Fernando Cabrera, who allowed consecutive homers to Ben Zobrist and Gabe Gross in Friday’s 14-3 loss to the Rays, was fined an undisclosed amount for flipping the ball into air when he left the mound.
