TORONTO (AP) -The Oakland Athletics activated right-hander Esteban Loaiza from the 15-day disabled list before Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing Loaiza to make his first start of the season.
To make room on the roster, the Athletics placed infielder Donnie Murphy on the 15-day DL with a strained rib cage muscle and moved right-hander Rich Harden (strained right shoulder) from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.
The move for Murphy is retroactive to Aug. 19. In four stints with the Athletics, Murphy is batting .221 with four home runs and 14 RBIs.
Murphy is unable to swing because of his injury, and manager Bob Geren said the muscle has been slow to heal.
“We feel like it’s going to be five or six days from now until he can swing a bat,” Geren said.
Murphy is the 22nd Oakland player to land on the DL this season, tying a club record. Oakland players have missed a team-record 967 games because of injury this season.
Loaiza is the 51st player to appear in a game for the Athletics, the most in the majors this year. He has been out with neck and knee injuries.
