EDS: UPDATES with quotes, details.
MIAMI (AP) -San Francisco right-hander Russ Ortiz’s arm is ailing again.
Ortiz left Monday’s game against the Florida Marlins in the fifth inning with a strained elbow, and he’s scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Tuesday.
He was making his third start after missing two months with a strained right forearm. He also spent time on the disabled list in May because of nerve irritation in his elbow.
Ortiz said the latest injury is different from the forearm strain. His arm began to bother him in the fourth inning, and his velocity fell off dramatically in the fifth.
“We’ll try to figure out what it is,” he said. “It just felt sore. I tried to grind it out, but they didn’t want me to throw like that. Something changed, something was different.”
Ortiz fell behind in the count 3-0 to Florida’s Hanley Ramirez to start the fifth. After a lengthy conversation on the mound with a trainer, Ortiz left with the Giants leading 5-4.
He’s 2-3 in 12 games this season with a 5.51 ERA. He said he never had arm trouble until this year.
“This is the worst experience I’ve had,” he said. “All of a sudden it happens, and that’s all I’ve had, is issues. It’s frustrating to deal with.”
