BOSTON (AP) -Right-hander Clay Buchholz, who has an 8-3 record and a 2.15 ERA in the minor leagues this season, is scheduled to start for the Boston Red Sox on Friday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Los Angeles Angels.
Buchholz, who is averaging nearly 13 strikeouts per nine innings in 22 minor league games this season, will become the ninth pitcher to start a game for the Red Sox this season.
The 23-year-old Buchholz was 7-2 with a 1.77 ERA in 16 games with Double-A Portland before being promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. There, he was 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA in six starts.
Buchholz was the 42nd player selected in the 2005 draft, a sandwich pick Boston received when Pedro Martinez signed with the New York Mets.
Right-hander John Lackey (15-7) is scheduled to start for the Angels.
Game 2 of the four-game weekend series Friday will pit Boston's Josh Beckett (15-5) against the Angels' Ervin Santana (5-11).
