MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was not in Wednesday’s starting lineup after fouling a ball off his foot the previous night.
Jeter remained in the game for three more at-bats – he had a hit each time – until leaving for a pinch-runner in the ninth. He had X-rays, which were negative, but manager Joe Girardi decided Jeter was too sore to play.
“I just felt like he couldn’t run around,” Girardi said before the Yankees played Minnesota.
Girardi said Jeter was available to pinch hit, and should be back on the field – following a scheduled day off for the team – for Friday’s game against Kansas City.
“He’ll never tell you that he can’t play, but by saying that it’s kind of sore and it’s throbbing all night you kind of get the feeling that it’s pretty rough,” Girardi said.
