HOUSTON (AP) -The New York Mets placed outfielder Marlon Anderson the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring Saturday and picked up the contract of Daniel Murphy from Triple-A New Orleans.
Anderson is hitting .222 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 73 games this season. He said his hamstring has bothered him since he tweaked it in the Mets’ first road trip to Colorado in late May.
“Nobody wants to go on the DL, no matter what it is,” the 34-year-old outfielder said. “There is always a letdown when you can’t be out there. But I think it’s best in the end, to get this thing worked out and taken care of.”
Murphy went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored on Friday night for New Orleans after hitting .308 with 13 homers, 67 RBIs and 14 stolen bases at Double-A Binghamton.
The 23-year-old player will make his major league debut starting in left field Saturday night.
“I’m a big believer in, once a guy gets to the big leagues, I don’t want him to sit around and think about it,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “I want him to get out there and play as quickly as possible.”
Manuel is optimistic Anderson will need only the 15 days to recover.
“Hopefully, this two-week period will give him a real good chance to get that thing as strong as he can,” Manuel said. “He’s been pretty much playing on an unstable leg. We’re going to try to find out if we can get some kind of stability in there.”
