TORONTO (AP) Toronto’s big-name signing Troy Tulowitzki crossed for the winning run in the 11th inning, giving the Blue Jays a 7-6 win against Kansas City on Friday, beginning what the team hopes will be a late-season surge with the addition of several key players.
The victory capped a big day for Toronto, which added pitcher Mark Lowe and outfielder Ben Revere in trade deals before Friday’s deadline, adding to the additions earlier in the week of Tulowitzki, ace pitcher David Price and reliever LaTroy Hawkins.
The Blue Jays edged within four games of the American League wild-card berths, while the Royals remained eight games clear atop the AL Central despite the loss.
Elsewhere, the Dodgers beat the Angels to open the all-Los Angeles series, St. Louis shut out Colorado, and Arizona extended its winning streak to six games with a 10-inning victory over Houston.
Toronto’s Tulowitzki played a key role in the win. With the score 6-6 in the 11th, he singled and advanced to second on a pitcher’s balk. Josh Donaldson’s hit to left-center gave Tulowitzki enough time to dash to home plate.
Donaldson went 3 for 4 with a walk and two RBIs.
The Dodgers beat the Angels 5-3, with ace Zack Greinke winning his fifth straight decision.
Greinke (10-2), who leads the majors with a 1.41 ERA, allowed two runs in eight innings.
Howie Kendrick homered for the Dodgers in his first game against his former team, and helped open a 1-1/2 game lead atop the NL West.
St. Louis’ Matt Carpenter homered for the third time in two games as the Cardinals strolled past Colorado 7-0.
Carpenter, who hit two homers and drove in four runs in a win over Colorado on Thursday, also had a double and reached base three times. He slammed a first-inning leadoff home run off Kyle Kendrick (4-12), who left after one inning with shoulder inflammation.
Cardinals starter Michael Wacha (12-4) pitched seven crisp innings as St. Louis improved to a majors-best 39-15 at home.
Arizona’s Wellington Castillo and Jake Lamb homered to open the 10th inning and lift the Diamondbacks over Arizona 6-4.
Castillo earlier had a single and a double, and hit the first pitch of the 10th from Pat Neshek (3-2) just inside the left-field foul pole, and Lamb followed with his shot.
The New York Mets took the opening game of a crucial series against Washington 2-1, with new fan favorite Wilmer Flores winning the game with a leadoff homer in the 12th inning.
The result narrowed the gap between the NL East’s top two teams to two games.
Two nights after endearing himself to Mets fans when they saw him wiping tears away after he momentarily thought he’d been traded, Flores drove in both his team’s runs and made a spectacular defensive play at second base to secure the win.
The win came on a day the Mets boosted their tepid offense by acquiring slugger Yoenis Cespedes from Detroit.
The Mets’ crosstown rivals, the Yankees, had a more comfortable victory, winning 13-6 at the Chicago White Sox.
Mark Teixeira homered batting left-handed and right-handed for the record 14th time in his career and hit his 10th career grand slam and a two-run homer to power the Yankees to victory.
Batting right-handed, Teixeira’s slam put New York ahead 6-0 in a five-run second. Batting left-handed, he connected for a 9-2 lead in a five-run fourth.
Teixeira, who went 3 for 4 with two walks, had been tied with Cleveland’s Nick Swisher at 13 games homering from both sides.
The Texas Rangers beat San Francisco 6-3 in the Giants’ first visit to Arlington since winning the 2010 World Series.
Elvis Andrus hit a two-run homer in the second to put the Rangers up 6-2. He doubled in the first, scoring then on Adrian Beltre’s homer.
Benches cleared when Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner aimed some comments toward the Rangers players at the end of the fourth inning, but the teams were kept apart by the umpires.
Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen hit a homer to help the Pirates win 5-4 at Cincinnati.
McCutchen connected off Michael Lorenzen (3-6), and Jung Ho Kang had three doubles and drove in a run as the Pirates got their first win of the season in Cincinnati after four losses. They finished July with an NL-best 17-9 record.
The Reds loaded the bases in the seventh against Pittsburgh’s newly acquired reliever Joakim Soria, but he caught a liner over his head to end the threat.
Baltimore came from six runs down to overrun trade-ravaged Detroit 8-7, with Adam Jones and Manny Machado both hitting homers.
Seattle’s Taijuan Walker pitched a one-hitter for his first career complete game, guiding the Mariners to a 6-1 victory over Minnesota.
Chicago’s Jason Hammel improved to 7-0 in his past nine starts against Milwaukee as he steered the Cubs past the Brewers 4-1.
Boston’s Mike Napoli, who surprisingly was not traded before the deadline, responded with a two-run homer to lift the Red Sox past Tampa Bay 7-5.
Cleveland’s Danny Salazar pitched eight innings of one-hit ball, leading the Indians past Oakland 2-1 and to a third successive win.
Miami pitcher A.J. Ramos issued three straight walks in the 11th inning, including Yonder Alonso with the bases loaded, to put San Diego ahead and the Padres went on to beat the Marlins 8-3.
Philadelphia’s Domonic Brown hit a two-run homer and Ryan Howard drove in four runs to power the Phillies past Atlanta 9-3.
