NEW YORK (AP) -Yankees outfielder Xavier Nady was out of the starting lineup Thursday night against the Los Angeles Angels because of inflammation in his right quadriceps.
Nady, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates last weekend, felt the injury after his first at-bat Wednesday night. He said he was able to run with it, but the team wanted to play it safe.
“You want to be smart and not lose him for an extended period,” manager Joe Girardi said.
Girardi said Nady was available to pinch hit, and would be re-evaluated Saturday.
Nady is batting .278 with two homers in six games with the Yankees. He was hitting .330 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs with the Pirates.
“It’s more irritating than anything,” Nady said. “Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be good to go.”
