WASHINGTON (AP) -Outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Cincinnati Reds before Friday night’s game with the Washington Nationals.
Hairston started in center field and batted leadoff for Cincinnati.
The Reds optioned right-hander Todd Coffey to Triple-A Louisville.
Hairston had been on the DL with a strained right hamstring since July 17. In the 31 games Hairston led off this season, he batted .395 and Cincinnati was 20-11 in those games.
It was the second stint on the disabled list for Hairston this season. He was out from June 10-25 with a broken left thumb. In between the visits to the DL, he batted .365.
Coffey was 0-0 with a 6.05 ERA in 17 appearances.
