PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates struck out at the trade deadline yet general manager Neal Huntington remains bullish as the team pushes for a second straight playoff berth.
Huntington said ”the right move was no move” after what he described as an ”aggressive” pursuit to upgrade a roster that began Thursday two games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central.
Huntington pointed to the impending return of outfielder Starling Marte and starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from injuries as reason to be optimistic.
There’s also a chance the Pirates could acquire players in August. They traded for Justin Morneau and Marlon Byrd last summer on their way to 94 wins and one of the National League’s two wild-card spots.
