NEW YORK (AP) -In a swap of minor leaguers, the New York Yankees traded shortstop Alberto Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals for pitcher Jhonny Nunez on Thursday.
A slick fielder, Gonzalez briefly filled in for the Yankees this season while star shortstop Derek Jeter was injured. The 25-year-old Gonzalez played in 28 games during a pair of stints with New York, batting .173 with two doubles and an RBI in 52 at-bats.
The Yankees acquired Gonzalez in the January 2007 trade that sent Randy Johnson to Arizona. Gonzalez was hitting .250 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 47 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year.
Nunez, a 22-year-old right-hander, had a 1.13 ERA in five relief appearances with Double-A Harrisburg, striking out eight and walking six in eight innings.
He began the season at Class-A Potomac, going 2-8 with a 5.22 ERA in 21 games, including 17 starts.
