SAN DIEGO (AP) -Byung-Hyun Kim outdueled All-Star Jake Peavy, leading the Florida Marlins to a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday and earning his first victory since May 28.
Kim and four relievers combined to hold the Padres to three hits as the Marlins split the four-game series with the NL West leaders.
Jeremy Hermida homered and doubled off Peavy (9-3), who gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked three.
Kim (4-4) allowed two runs and three hits – all for extra bases – in 6 1-3 innings, matching his longest outing of the year. He struck out seven and walked two.
Kevin Gregg pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.
Pirates 6, Brewers 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Adam LaRoche homered twice and Tom Gorzelanny outpitched Ben Sheets as the Pirates handed the NL West leaders their third straight loss.
LaRoche hit a two-run homer in the third off Sheets and a solo homer off Carlos Villanueva in the seventh. He also doubled ahead of Xavier Nady’s RBI single in the fifth.
Gorzelanny (9-4) gave up Geoff Jenkins’ two-run homer in the fourth while allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked two.
Matt Capps pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 10 opportunities.
Five of the Pirates’ eight hits off Sheets (10-4) went for extra bases. The All-Star gave up five runs on eight hits in six innings and lost for the first time in six games, striking out six and walking one.
