SAN DIEGO (AP) -Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy will have his next start moved back to Saturday to give him an extra day of rest.
Peavy was scheduled to start on Friday night against San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum in the opener of a three-game series. But the club decided to give Peavy one extra day of rest following his 127-pitch outing in his last start, a 3-1 win at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Padres manager Bud Black said he spoke about it with Peavy and pitching coach Darren Balsley.
They decided “decided since Jake was coming off a physical performance, he could use the day off,” Black said.
Peavy is 8-6 with an ERA of 2.67, second in the NL coming into Wednesday night’s action. Lincecum, 11-3 with a 2.78 ERA, will now face rookie Josh Banks (3-4).
The move will push back Greg Maddux (4-8) to Sunday, assuming he is not traded before Thursday’s non-waiver trade deadline, and leave Chris Young (4-4) to face the New York Mets on Tuesday.
Maddux snapped a career-high 14-game winless streak on Monday night in an 8-5 win over Arizona. Maddux, who has a full no-trade clause, has told Padres general manager Kevin Towers he will only agree to a deal with a West Coast to be close to his home in Las Vegas.
“It’s possible,” Black said. “I wouldn’t be surprised either way. If it happens, not many players will be involved.”
