TORONTO (AP) It seemed the Toronto Blue Jays needed to add starting pitching to help their playoff push. Instead, they traded for a superstar shortstop.
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos says acquiring five-time All-Star Troy Tulowitzki was ”the rare chance that one of the best at his position was available.”
The Blue Jays also acquired reliever LaTroy Hawkins from Colorado in exchange for shortstop Jose Reyes and minor league right-handed pitchers Miguel Castro, Jeff Hoffman and Jesus Tinoco.
Toronto (50-50) is tied for second in the AL East, seven games behind the New York Yankees. Blue Jays starters have an ERA of 4.38 so far, tied for third worst in the AL.
Toronto has not reached the playoffs since winning the 1993 World Series – the longest drought of any major league team.
Hawkins will take Reyes’ spot on the roster for Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia. Tulowitzki will be added to the roster Wednesday.
