ATLANTA (AP) -Rick Ankiel was held out of the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting lineup for the second straight day with a sore abdomen, and manager Tony La Russa said Monday he isn’t sure when the center fielder will return.
Ankiel, who has seven homers and 21 RBIs this month, missed Sunday’s 9-1 loss to New York after pulling a muscle the night before.
Needing another outfielder, St. Louis recalled Nick Stavinoha from Triple-A Memphis and optioned reliever Mitchell Boggs to its top farm club before Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
Stavinoha made his major league debut last month, hitting .250 with two RBIs in five games. Boggs went 3-2 with a 7.41 ERA in eight appearances, six of them starts.
Ankiel is hitting .282 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs in 92 games.
