CLEVELAND (AP) -Fausto Carmona is on the verge of his comeback, and Indians manager Eric Wedge can’t wait to see the right-hander on the mound.
“Hopefully, it’s the first of the rest of them coming back,” Wedge said, referring to the team’s long list of injured players.
Carmona, who has been out since May 24 with a strained left hip, will be activated from the disabled list on Saturday to pitch against the Minnesota Twins. Carmona won 19 games last season, but his injury along with ones to catcher Victor Martinez and designated hitter Travis Hafner sabotaged Cleveland’s season.
Wedge is excited about Carmona’s return, and the possibility that Martinez and Hafner may not be too far behind.
“It’s good for the club to see guys on the DL come back,” Wedge said, “especially as pivotal as they are.”
Hafner, out since May 30 with a weak right shoulder, is scheduled to take a strength test on Monday.
Martinez will begin baseball activities – playing catch, swinging a bat – that day as well. The All-Star had surgery to remove chips in his elbow on June 13.
