SEATTLE (AP) -Mariners’ rookie catcher Jeff Clement left Tuesday night’s game with the Boston Red Sox in the third inning after injuring his right hand when a foul ball ripped the finger nail off his thumb.
With two outs in the top of the second, Boston’s Dustin Pedroia hit a foul ball behind home plate that Clement chased to the backstop. Clement placed his right hand through the protective screen to brace himself and the ball clipped his hand as it fell just behind the screen.
Clement immediately looked at his hand and displayed his discomfort, punching his hand toward the ground in disgust. Mariners manager Jim Riggleman and trainer Rick Griffin tended to Clement, looking specifically at his thumb. Griffin taped the thumb and Clement finished off the top of the second, then struck out in the bottom of the inning before being lifted.
Kenji Johjima took over behind the plate.
