CHICAGO (AP) -Cincinnati Reds right-hander Aaron Harang will have an MRI exam on his right forearm after he experienced discomfort early Wednesday.
Harang lasted only 4 1-3 innings Tuesday night, when he yielded a career-high seven walks in a 7-3 loss to the Cubs. He left for Cincinnati before Wednesday night’s game, and will likely miss his last start before the All-Star game.
“I’m going to do some treatment beforehand and then go over and get my MRI done,” Harang said in the Reds clubhouse on Wednesday.
Harang said the arm started bothering him Wednesday morning and, after talking with manager Dusty Baker and pitching coach Dick Poole, he decided to have it checked again.
“Make sure there’s no structural damage and start getting it better,” Harang said.
Harang was examined last week in Cincinnati for ligament issues, but nothing was found.
“He (doctor) thought it was more muscle than anything,” Harang said. “Hopefully it’s just something minor that a good amount of rest will take care of it.”
Harang (3-11) allowed six earned runs and gave up five hits against Chicago, after taking a couple extra days between starts. He’s lost six of his last seven decisions.
Last season, the 6-foot-7 Harang went 16-6 and was fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting. He was second in the NL in strikeouts (218) and innings pitched (231 2-3).
Baker also believes the forearm has been causing Harang problems.
“He said he felt good yesterday,” Baker said. “He woke up 5:30, 6 this morning and said that he had more discomfort than usual. So we’re going to send him back for some extended tests. Doc thinks it’s still in the muscle, but we’re going to take precautionary MRI to see what’s wrong if anything.”
