BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -Indians prospect Asdrubal Cabrera was fined an undisclosed amount but played for Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday, one night after throwing his helmet and raising his bat toward plate umpire Jason Klein while getting ejected.
Cabrera went 1-for-6 in a 7-6, 13-inning loss to the Rochester Red Wings. It was announced that he would be fined by the International League but not serve a suspension for his actions in Wednesday night’s game.
After striking out to end the ninth inning in a tie game, Cabrera raised his bat toward Klein and was ejected after throwing his helmet. Justin Vogel, the first base umpire who had come in to help defuse the situation, was then hit by Cabrera’s batting gloves when they were tossed aside.
“He crossed the line a little bit, but there was no suspension,” Buffalo manager Torey Lovullo said. “The fine is pretty standard. But I give credit to Jason Klein for not overreacting and moderating the comments in his report.”
The switch-hitting Cabrera was optioned by Cleveland on June 11, when he was hitting just .184 through 52 games. With Buffalo, he has played in 23 games is batting .323.
Since his demotion, Cabrera has not spoken with the media.
“That’s a personal decision,” Lovullo said. “He has his mind in the right place, trying to focus on baseball.”
