NEW YORK (AP) -The New York Yankees promoted hustling Brett Gardner from Triple-A and put him into the starting lineup Monday night, batting leadoff and playing left field against Texas.
Along with selecting Gardner’s contract from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees optioned outfielder Justin Christian to their top minor league team. They also designated catcher Chris Stewart for assignment.
Gardner was leading all Triple-A players with 10 triples and 34 stolen bases. He was hitting .287 with three home runs and 29 RBIs, and led the International League with 61 walks.
The 24-year-old Gardner was drafted by the Yankees in 2005 and caught the team’s attention this year in spring training, hitting .324 and leading the Yankees with six steals as a non-roster invitee.
Christian joined the Yankees last Tuesday and went 3-for-15 with two RBIs. He was hitless in three at-bats Sunday in a 3-1 loss to the Mets.
Stewart briefly was with the Yankees this year. He made one start and was 0-for-3.
