MIAMI (AP) -The Tampa Bay Rays scored 10 runs in the fifth inning against the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night, one short of a club record.
Tampa Bay’s first nine batters of the inning reached and scored in the 32-minute frame, one that left the Rays with a 14-0 lead. In all, the Rays sent 14 batters to the plate during the outburst, which began with Carl Crawford’s second home run of the game.
Evan Longoria had two hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs in the inning, during which the Rays piled up seven hits, drew three walks and had pitcher James Shields reach on an error.
The Rays’ franchise record for runs in an inning is 11, done twice previously: last Aug. 27 at Baltimore, and on May 28, 2000, against Seattle.
It also was the most runs allowed by the Marlins in an inning this season, easily topping the seven they yielded in the second inning at Philadelphia on May 30.
