ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -The Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed second baseman B.J. Upton on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left quadriceps Wednesday and recalled outfielder Jonny Gomes from Triple-A Durham.
Upton hasn’t played since he was hurt last Friday while running to first. The Devil Rays hope Upton will be ready to rejoin the team around June 23.
“It’s been getting better every day,” Upton said after the Devil Rays lost 9-0 to the San Diego Padres. “Take a week or so off and see how it feels.”
Upton is hitting .320 with nine homers and 30 RBIs. An exam Wednesday showed more inflammation than the team anticipated, prompting the DL move.
“The MRI revealed that he needed a little bit of rest,” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. “We’re just concerned about the long haul, pushing him right now. It just wasn’t necessary. We thought it was better to shut him down for right now.”
Gomes hit .184, including 18 strikeouts in 49 at-bats, before being optioned to Durham on May 28. He appeared in 13 games with Durham, hitting .302 with one homer and seven RBIs.
