ATLANTA (AP) -The Atlanta Braves’ new cleanup hitter didn’t have much time to battle nerves before his major league debut.
The Braves made a late decision to call up first baseman Barbaro Canizares on Thursday. The phone call to Canizares at Triple-A Gwinnett came about three hours before he was to hit cleanup against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He arrived at Turner Field about 40 minutes before the game.
Canizares was leading Gwinnett with a .344 batting average and 37 RBIs, and he shared the team lead with eight home runs.
The Braves placed infielder Greg Norton on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right ankle. Regular first baseman Casey Kotchman already was on the disabled list with a right calf strain.
