PITTSBURGH (AP) -Washington infielder Ronnie Belliard was in the lineup at second base Tuesday night for a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the day after he was activated from the disabled list after Monday night’s home game against San Francisco.
Belliard had been on the disabled list since May 19 – retroactive to May 16 – due to a left calf strain. Belliard, 33, had played in four rehabilitation games with Nationals affiliates Double-A Harrisburg and Class A Potomac.
Before being injured, Belliard was batting .194 with two home runs and nine RBI in 26 games for Washington.
To make roster room, Washington optioned right-handed starting pitcher Tyler Clippard to Triple-A Indianapolis. Clippard made his Nationals debut Monday night, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks in 4 1-3 innings against the Giants. The 23-year-old struck out six to match his career high in the loss.
