TORONTO (AP) -Baltimore’s Jay Payton was ejected after arguing with plate umpire Bill Miller after being retired on a foul popup in the fourth inning of Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Toronto catcher Rod Barajas reached around the screen behind the plate and plucked Payton’s popup out of the air just above the hands of a fan. A frustrated Payton slammed his helmet and bat to the ground in anger, and had to be restrained by manager Dave Trembley as he argued with Miller.
Payton was ejected when he continued arguing after walking away. A disgusted Payton flipped his batting gloves over his shoulder as he headed back to the dugout.
Adam Jones replaced Payton in center field.
