NEW YORK (AP) -Yankees catcher Jorge Posada went 1-for-3 on Thursday in his first start since coming off the disabled list.
Posada singled on the first pitch he saw in the second inning of New York’s 9-8 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Posada had been out since April 28 with right rotator cuff tendinitis. He was activated Wednesday.
The Blue Jays tried to test Posada’s arm once they got their first baserunner in the third on Rod Barajas’ walk. Posada didn’t have to throw when Joe Inglett singled on the pitch. In the eighth, Posada’s throw was high as Brad Wilkerson stole second.
Posada said he didn’t get a good grip but probably wouldn’t have had a chance, anyway, on the curveball. He said he felt no pain.
The All-Star catcher drew loud ovations as he ran in from the bullpen and when he came to the plate for his first at-bat.
“I was happy with the way they came out and cheered,” Posada said. “It was fun to see.”
Posada was removed for a pinch runner after walking to lead off the eighth.
The 36-year-old Posada signed a $52.4 million, four-year contract last offseason. He is batting .303 with one homer and 11 RBIs in 66 at-bats this year.
Posada’s stint on the DL was the first of his major league career, which began in 1995.
