CHICAGO (AP) -Coming off a perfect showing at their ivy-covered home, the Chicago Cubs face a more prickly challenge – proving they can win on the road.
The Cubs wrapped up a 7-0 week at Wrigley Field with a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. It was their first unbeaten homestand of at least six games since 1970 – in the interim, every team in the majors except Tampa Bay has accomplished the feat, the Elias Sports Bureau said.
The Cubs started a seven-game road swing Monday night at San Diego. After three games against the Padres, Chicago plays four times at Dodger Stadium.
At 36-21, the Cubs own the best record in the majors. This is the first year since 1908 – when the Cubs last won the World Series – that they entered June with the top record in baseball, Elias said.
The Cubs are 26-8 at home but only 10-13 away. They play 13 of their next 16 games on the road.
Center fielder Jim Edmonds, cut by the Padres earlier this season, contributed several key hits during the Cubs’ recent surge.
“It doesn’t mean much unless you do it tomorrow,” he said.
