PITTSBURGH (AP) -Carlos Beltran missed his second straight game with a stomach virus.
Beltran’s backup Angel Pagan was also not available Monday night against the Pirates after he left Sunday’s game against Florida with a groin injury.
Mets manager Jerry Manuel said the team is expected to place Pagan on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday – the day infielder Alex Cora is eligible to be activated from the disabled list.
“I expect that to be the case,” Manuel said before Monday’s game. “If that’s the case, we’ll play one guy short tonight and then we’ll add Cora tomorrow.”
Pagan pulled up hobbling while pursuing Hanley Ramirez’s double in the fourth inning Sunday. He was playing because of Beltran’s illness.
The National League’s leading hitter at .352, Beltran was originally on the posted lineup Monday but word came about an hour before first pitch that he would not start. Jeremy Reed was his replacement, and first baseman David Murphy was moved up from sixth to Beltran’s No. 3 spot in the batting order.
ut outfielder Ryan Church and infielders Cora, Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes, who on the disabled list.
