BALTIMORE (AP) -Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz left Saturday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning after injuring his left hand.
Ortiz, who was 2-for-3 with his 13th home run, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs, apparently sustained the injury while fouling off a 3-1 Dennis Sarfate pitch.
Following the foul, Ortiz stepped out of the batter’s box and flexed his hand a couple of times. After Ortiz conferred briefly with plate umpire Bob Davidson, Boston manager Terry Francona and a trainer emerged from the dugout to check on the designated hitter.
Ortiz removed his batting glove for the examination and then was taken out of the game. Sean Casey replaced him and flew out to left.
