CINCINNATI (AP) -The day after Kirk Saarloos failed to retire any of the seven batters he faced in Cincinnati’s 14-10 loss to Pittsburgh, the Reds optioned the right-hander to Triple-A Louisville and recalled left-hander Bobby Livingston.
“I don’t feel like I’m the problem,” Saarloos said. “I think I’ve had three bad innings this year. I felt like, in the other 20 appearances, I was throwing the ball pretty (darn) good. Those three appearances are the bed I’m lying in.”
Saarloos, 0-4 with a 7.04 ERA, will work out of the Bats bullpen, Reds manager Jerry Narron said.
“He’s just been up and down lately,” Narron said. “Hopefully, he’ll be able to go down and get some consistent work.”
Livingston is making his second appearance with Cincinnati. In his previous stint, he made his first major league start on May 13 at Los Angeles, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in 5 1-3 innings for a 6.75 ERA. He was optioned to Louisville on May 15. In his two stints with the Bats, Livingston was 0-3 with a 3.88 ERA in nine starts.
“He’ll pitch in the bullpen right now, give us some length out there” Narron said.
