CINCINNATI (AP) -In only eight innings, the Cleveland Indians’ pitching staff became more of a mess.
The Indians put right-handed starter Anthony Reyes and left-handed reliever Aaron Laffey on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, a day after both were forced to leave a game because of injuries. The Indians now have six players on the disabled list, five of them pitchers.
Left-handers Jeremy Sowers and Rich Rundles were called up from Triple-A Columbus. Manager Eric Wedge planned to use both of them as relievers on Saturday for the second game of their intrastate series with the Cincinnati Reds.
“They’re both in the bullpen tonight, and we’ll go from there,” Wedge said. “We’re taking it day by day right now.”
A 3-1 loss on Friday night left the Indians with the worst winning percentage in the AL at 16-27 and two more hits to an already depleted pitching staff.
t couple years, had trouble feeling the ball and couldn’t throw strikes. He left after three innings, having walked six batters and hit another. He has inflammation in the elbow, and will undergo tests on Monday.
“Last year it was a little bit worse,” Reyes said. “This time I just didn’t have command (of pitches), that’s all. They decided to be careful and get me out of there.”
At that point, Wedge was thinking he could move Laffey back into the rotation if needed. Laffey made four starts before he was moved to the bullpen on May 6, and had done well as a reliever, going 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA. But Laffey felt muscles in his side cramp on a pitch in the eighth inning, then felt a sharp pain on his next throw, forcing him out.
He won’t throw for the next few days, giving the muscles time to heal. He also will be examined again on Monday, when the Indians might have a better idea how long he’ll be sidelined.
“We don’t know the extent of it or anything else,” Laffey said.
Sowers was with the Indians from May 7-13, going 0-1 in a pair of starts and giving up 12 runs in nine innings before being sent back to the minors. Rundles was 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 15 relief appearances for Columbus.
