WASHINGTON (AP) -The Nationals have demoted struggling starter Daniel Cabrera to the bullpen plan to add another rookie to the rotation.
Cabrera is 0-5 with 5.95 ERA. He allowed seven runs and eight hits in five innings in his last start, a rain-shortened 7-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
The Nationals planned to promote Craig Stammen from Triple-A to start Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The move will means Washington will have a rotation consisting of four rookies and one second-year player, supported by a bullpen that entered Wednesday’s game with a 1-14 record.
The Nationals’ 5.94 ERA is the worst in the majors.
