BOSTON (AP) -The Boston Red Sox purchased the contract of right-hander Chris Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned outfielder Jonathan Van Every back before Sunday’s game against the Milwuakee Brewers.
Smith, 27, who was 1-2 with a 1.45 ERA in 10 games with Pawtucket, is on a major league team for the first time in his career.
Van Every, called up on Wednesday for added outfield depth after rightfielder J.D. Drew and centerfielder Coco Crisp had to leave Tuesday’s game early, got his first major league hit with a single in three at-bats against the Baltimore Orioles.
Drew left Tuesday’s game after spraining his wrist attempting to make a sliding catch and, a few innings later, Crisp had to come out because of a headache and upset stomach.
Smith was recalled after Boston used six relievers in its doubleheader sweep over the Brewers on Saturday. The Red Sox also avoided using left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima, who has a sore wrist, and manager Terry Francona said before Sunday’s game that he might not be available.
