SEATTLE (AP) -Daisuke Matsuzaka could be back on the mound for the Boston Red Sox by the end of next week.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona also said Saturday before Boston’s game against Seattle that first baseman Kevin Youkilis will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday. Youkilis has been out with strained side muscle.
Matsuzaka made his third rehab start with Pawtucket Friday night in Toledo and gave up two runs on three hits and struck out nine in five innings. If Matsuzaka went on his normal rest, he could start for the Red Sox next Friday against the New York Mets at Fenway Park or be activated later that weekend.
Matsuzaka has been on the disabled list since April 15 with a shoulder strain.
