SEATTLE (AP) -Big Papi is going to be one big spectator for the final two games of Boston’s road trip.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said before Saturday’s game in Seattle that David Ortiz would not start the final two games of Boston’s road trip. The plan is for the five-time All-Star to return to the lineup Tuesday when the Red Sox open a six-game homestand against Toronto.
Ortiz went 0 for 7 and stranded 12 base runners – tying a team record – in an extra-inning loss at the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. He didn’t play Friday in the series opener in Seattle and Francona decided to give his slugger an extended break.
Ortiz is batting .208 and is without a homer in 144 at-bats. His only longer streak was 145 from Sept. 9, 1998 to June 9, 2000, over partial seasons coming up with Minnesota.
