DENVER (AP) -The Arizona Diamondbacks placed third baseman Chad Tracy on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained left rib cage and promoted Mark Reynolds from Double-A Mobile to take his roster spot.
Tracy got hurt Saturday against Houston and aggravated the injury Tuesday night at Colorado.
“With Tracy’s situation, it got to a point where we had to do something,” manager Bob Melvin said.
Reynolds hit .306 with six home runs and 22 RBIs with Mobile. He was in the starting lineup against the Rockies on Wednesday night, slated to make his major league debut.
“We needed a third baseman and Brian Barden is hurt in Triple-A, so our next option was to go to Double-A and get Reynolds,” Melvin said. “Mark had some time with us in spring training and he was swinging the bat well for Mobile.”
The Diamondbacks made three other moves, claiming infielder Jason Smith off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and designating right-hander Casey Daigle for assignment. Smith will be in Denver on Thursday.
The club also transferred outfielder Jeff DaVanon (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
Daigle was 1-1 with a 10.13 ERA in 17 games with Triple-A Tucson. Smith hit .212 with one double, one triple and four RBIs in 27 games for the Blue Jays.
