KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -Sammy Sosa moved closer to becoming the fifth player with 600 homers Wednesday night when he hit No. 597 in the fourth inning of the Texas Rangers’ game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Disney World.
The two-run, opposite-field shot off left-hander Casey Fossum also extended Sosa’s major league record for most ballparks homered in to 45. It was Sosa’s ninth homer of the season.
The Rangers are playing three games in the minor league park at Disney World – about 90 miles northeast of Tampa Bay’s regular home in St. Petersburg – because the Devil Rays are trying to increase their exposure in the Orlando area.
