SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel thinks slugging first baseman Carlos Delgado probably is headed to the disabled list.
Manuel expects the Mets to make a decision Saturday on Delgado, who was expected to miss his fifth straight game Friday night with a sore right hip after hurting himself sliding last month.
“We’re sneaking up on a decision,” Manuel said. “I can’t use the word, ‘optimist.’ I can’t use that word. I’d have to go the other way.”
Outfielder Jeremy Reed surprisingly took Delgado’s place at first base against San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum.
The Mets also kept shortstop Jose Reyes out of the starting lineup for one more day with a stiff right calf. Reyes lobbied Manuel to play, but the manager elected caution.
