MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Detroit right-hander Virgil Vasquez was optioned back to Triple-A Toledo following his major league debut Sunday night at Minnesota, and Tigers manager Jim Leyland said the team will call up reliever Tim Byrdak to fill his roster spot. Filling in for Jeremy Bonderman, Vasquez was pounded for nine hits, six runs, two walks and one hit batter in 2 2-3 innings in a 16-4 loss to the Twins. Bonderman had a cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand and is expected to return to the rotation on Friday. Byrdak appeared in parts of the last two seasons for the Baltimore Orioles. He has a 1.64 ERA and 25 strikeouts with 17 hits and seven walks allowed in 22 innings - all out of the bullpen - for Toledo. |
