DENVER (AP) -Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman returned to the starting lineup Tuesday night after missing three games because of a sore left wrist.
“It feels pretty good. I came in early today and took some swings on the field and it actually felt pretty good,” Berkman said. “Taking those days off really helped it. I got some good anti-inflamatories. so I’m in good shape.”
The All-Star slugger is hitting .184 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs. The Astros opened a series against Colorado.
Berkman hurt himself on a check-swing third strike to end Houston’s 8-5 loss to the Cubs on Thursday.
“I didn’t even think about it until the next morning when I woke up and remembered I took a check swing,” he said.
Berkman said he felt he felt he could have played in the Astros’ weekend sweep of San Diego. The team wanted to be cautious and hold him out, giving him four days off, including Monday’s off-day.
“I thought it would be a one-day deal,” Berkman said. “I actually wanted to play on Sunday but they didn’t let me. They wanted to give me the extra couple of days.”
