PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Phillies closer Tom Gordon was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday with inflammation in the rotator cuff of his throwing arm.
Gordon flew back to Philadelphia earlier this week to be examined after experiencing tightness in his right shoulder. He was placed on the disabled list effective May 2 and will be eligible to pitch again on May 17.
Opening day starter Brett Myers, who was moved from the rotation to help prop up a struggling bullpen, has served as the closer in Gordon's absence. Myers picked up his first career save in a 9-7 win over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
Gordon, 39, has five saves in eight opportunities this season, going 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA in nine games.
The Phillies called up right-hander Yoel Hernandez from Triple-A Ottawa to fill Gordon's roster spot.
