TORONTO (AP) -The Chicago White Sox placed utilityman Alexei Ramirez on the restricted list and recalled right-hander Adam Russell from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
Ramirez, a Cuban defector, has a work visa that would prevent him from re-entering the United States if he leaves the country. He will work out in Chicago this weekend, taking batting practice and doing fielding drills, then rejoin the roster when the White Sox return home Tuesday for a three-game series with Minnesota.
The 26-year-old Ramirez, a former member of Cuba’s national team, is batting .121 with no homers and two RBIs in 14 games this season.
The 25-year-old Russell was 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA at Charlotte, where he struck out 11 in nine innings. Chicago took Russell in the sixth round of the 2004 draft.
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen wanted an extra pitcher for his bullpen after a doubleheader last weekend forced him to start left-hander Nick Masset against Baltimore on Wednesday. Russell provides cover for Masset, who worked four innings in the loss to the Orioles.
“I didn’t want to take a chance,” Guillen said. “Just in case something happens, we’ve got this kid to cover the innings. That was the only thing going through my mind.”
