CLEVELAND (AP) -Fausto Carmona, who dominated Baltimore in his last start, was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday as the Cleveland Indians prepared for the return of starter Cliff Lee.
Carmona allowed one run and six hits in a career-high 8 1-3 innings during Sunday’s 6-1 win over the Orioles. The right-hander made it tough for manager Eric Wedge to send him down to the minors, but the Indians didn’t have many other options because Lee has recovered from an abdominal strain and is due back from the disabled list this week.
Carmona is 2-0 in his last three starts, allowing three runs in 22 innings.
For now, infielder Ben Francisco will take Carmona’s spot on the roster.
Lee is expected to be activated Thursday to make his first start this season, against Toronto. The left-hander, who went 14-11 last season, got hurt early in spring training.
Francisco batted .299 with one homer, nine RBIs and seven steals in 18 games with the Bisons.
