NEW YORK (AP) -Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Tom Gorzelanny left Wednesday’s 13-1 win over the New York Mets after his back tightened up. He didn’t expect to miss a start.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Gorzelanny’s first pitch to David Wright sailed way outside. He bent over in pain, and manager John Russell and a trainer quickly came out of the dugout.
After several warmup pitches, Gorzelanny stayed in and got Wright to ground out to end the inning, which made him eligible for a win. The Pirates led 8-0 at the time.
“I think it was the adrenaline that enabled me to get through that inning,” he said. “It definitely was not the best feeling. I tried to fight it through with two outs in that inning. I wanted the win. There was no way they were going to take me out of the game.”
Gorzelanny (2-3) allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings, walking five and striking out four.
