MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Minnesota Twins catcher Mike Redmond had an MRI exam on his sore right shoulder on Wednesday. The findings may come as a surprise to a lot of people, but not to Redmond.
“They found a Bud Light in there,” the veteran jokester quipped. “That’s a good thing. It’s amazing they found it. It’s a long neck.”
Redmond has not played since Saturday and was only available on an emergency basis for the series finale on Wednesday night against Tampa Bay. He said the shoulder has been bothering him for a few weeks, but the MRI revealed nothing unusual, aside from the bottle of suds of course.
Team doctors are hoping they will be able to treat the injury with medication. The team has the day off on Thursday and Redmond will be evaluated again on Friday before the Twins open a three-game series with Kansas City at the Metrodome.
sore arm for a couple of weeks,” manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Redmond said he doesn’t anticipate a trip to the disabled list. Then again, he’s probably not the best one to ask about it.
The gritty catcher’s lone trip to the disabled list came in his first season in 1998 with Florida. But this season has been rough already for Redmond, who expected to get the lion’s share of the work behind the plate with Joe Mauer starting the season on the disabled list with a back injury.
But he’s been slowed by a groin injury early and now the sore shoulder.
“It’s definitely not how I drew it up coming out of spring training,” Redmond said.
Youngster Jose Morales got his fourth straight start at catcher on Wednesday night. He entered the game hitting .375, but has struggled at times defensively.
In other injury news, reliever Jesse Crain threw about 20 pitches on Wednesday and said he “felt great” as he works his way back from a sore shoulder. The hard-throwing right-hander has been on the disabled list since March 27. He will throw twice more – on Friday and Sunday – before the team makes a decision on his return.
“It feels better every day,” Crain said.
