KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -Alberto Callaspo homered to lead off the second inning for the Kansas City Royals on Friday night, ending the longest stretch without a home run in the majors.
He connected off Detroit Tigers rookie Rick Porcella, driving the 0-1 pitch an estimated 391 feet to right field and helping the Royals a 3-0 lead.
The 26-year-old Callaspo broke into the big leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006 and had gone 441 at-bats without hitting a home run. He joined the Royals last season.
