TORONTO (AP) -The Texas Rangers placed outfielder Marlon Byrd on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with inflammation in his left knee and purchased the contract of infielder German Duran from Triple-A Oklahoma.
Byrd is batting .129 with one RBI in 13 games this season.
A sixth-round pick in the June 2005 draft, German made his major league debut at third base Thursday at Toronto. German played in place of Hank Blalock, who left Wednesday’s game in the 10th inning with a stiff back.
Rangers manager Ron Washington said Blalock will likely sit again Friday and return to the lineup Saturday at Boston.
Also held out of the lineup Thursday was shortstop Michael Young (sore right calf). Washington said Young, who was replaced by Ramon Vazquez, was available to pinch-hit if needed.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Duran, Texas recalled right-hander Thomas Diamond and placed him on the 60-day disabled list. The Rangers’ first-round pick in the 2004 draft, Diamond is recovering from Tommy John surgery in March 2007.
