OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -Third baseman Nomar Garciaparra has left the Oakland Athletics’ game against Boston after one inning with tightness in his right calf.
Garciaparra started in place of injured Eric Chavez, drawing a walk and scoring during Oakland’s five-run first inning against Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. Garciaparra, the longtime Boston shortstop, was playing just his second career game against the Red Sox.
After a first inning featuring 83 pitches and lasting 41 minutes, Bobby Crosby replaced Garciaparra at third base to start the second.
Matsuzaka also didn’t make it out of the first inning. He was replaced by Justin Masterson.
